The Farmer's Message

An elderly farmer teaches a valuable lesson

Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your father which is in heaven. Matthew 5:16

He wore the wide brimmed farmer’s hat and carried the worn face of a man that met the sun early every morning. His small wife entered the chapel doors with him, and her wrinkles matched his as if to advertise what the Bible says about husbands and wives. They had walked together every mile.

He laid his big hat on the last pew, and they walked to the middle of the chapel and sat down in front of four young college age people. They were talking, laughing, and playing, which created a disturbance. There could be no worship in the chapel.

After a time the farmer and his wife moved into the aisle and walked forward to the altar. They stood looking at the cross outside. The farmer began to pray aloud as they stood there, holding hands. Slowly, a hush fell upon the young students as the old man stood talking to God in a prayer that was as simple and straight as the farmer himself. The young people stared straight ahead as the farmer and his wife turned and moved toward the rear doors. The four college students moved to the front of the chapel and stood exactly where the old couple had stood.

They looked out at the cross for a long time and then just as quietly turned and left the chapel. An eternal message had been passed, and you have to believe that someone will never be the same.

Prayer – We thank you Lord for your servants that light the path so that we may find the way.
