A Poem by Jonathan Futch

Him and Her

He watched her intently…
…as she came in
…as she gathered firewood

Life had been very difficult…
…her husband had died
…there had been no rain for over a year

She had nothing left…
…no more money
…no more food

Well…almost nothing…
…there were two small coins
…there was a handful of grain and a few drops of oil

He made a request…
…look carefully
…give me something to eat

An explanation was given…
…it was all she had to live on
…it was all she and her son had left to eat

But, her hands and heart responded…
…she gave her last two coins to him
…she used the last of the grain and oil to prepare some food for him

And he said…
…it was more than anyone else had given
…there would be more than she had given

Why?  Because…
…Her trust was in him alone
…A miracle had been performed

She knew…
…He would always be her provision
…There would now be more than enough

He knew…
…her humble heart was filled with hope
…her fearful heart was filled with joy

He looked at her…
…and smiled
